Bloc Sunglassess Frame Technology

All BLOC frames, with the exception of metals, are produced in 2 materials:

(1) Nylon 66 - A tough, flexible material which will stand up to the rigours of outdoor high-impact sports

(2) TR90 - As tough as Nylon 66, TR90 is a lightweight and highly flexible material usually only associated with the production of optical eyewear. Due to its clear material base, TR90 allows us the freedom to produce superior crystal and tortoiseshell colourations. In our experience, the use of polycarbonate in frame manufacture has proved unsatisfactory as it is unstable and therefore results in breakages.

All frames are machine polished for up to 24 hours before being cleaned and sterilized, after which they are sprayed or hand painted depending on the complexity of the finish required.

Bloc Sunglassess Sports Frames

Maintaining both the inherent properties and exacting standards of manufacture as BLOC Classics, BLOC Sports Frames utilise an 8 based curve to provide a natural close cranial fit and thus helping to eliminate the vortex of wind which can be so disconcerting during high speed pursuits. The 8 based curve also dramatically improves peripheral vision. The frames are further reinforced in areas of stress and fitted with integral sports hinges to increase strength, flexibility and durability. Following polishing, cleansing and painting, frames are fitted with soft rubber nose pads to assist facial grip without the uncomfortable cranial pressure often associated with some other brands.

Subtle colours and a radical departure from the sports look, BLOC Classic eyewear has been designed for an everyday, more sophisticated look, whilst still utilising the technological advancements made over the past decade with the sports range. BLOC Classic eyewear is meticulously hand finished to the highest standards.

Bloc Sunglassess Metal Frames

Metal frames are hand constructed from a combination of components - nickel/stainless steel & monel - ensuring each part of the frame has the best metal composite i.e. the temples require a more flexible metal than the nose bridge which must remain ridged. Hypoallergenic coatings are applied and optical nose pads are then fitted to ensure maximum comfort.

Light Management Lenses (Karbon 8)

All BLOC lenses are individually moulded and heat hardened under strict laboratory controls to meet the meticulous requirements in:
(a) spherical power, (b) astigmatic power and (c) prismatic power, needed to claim Optical Class 1. This class represents quality equivalent to optical prescription lenses. Piece by piece, each and every lens is then laboriously viewed and quality controlled to ensure no defective lenses ever make it into one of our frames. A good test to see if a lens is optically class one decentred is look at across section of a lens - if it's decentred you will see that it is tapered, whereas if it isn't it generally won't be.

Karbon 8 is a highly advanced lens material, lightweight, scratch resistant and extremely durable. It is the strongest lens material available and lends itself perfectly to the purpose of high performance and sports specific pursuits. Special lens tints create exceptional optical clarity and enhance perception of detail in varying light conditions.

Light Management

UVC 200-290nm
The shortest wave length and potentially the most dangerous, though fortunately most of UVC is filtered out by the ozone layer and dose not pose a danger.

UVB 290-320nm
Again, very little UVB reaches the earth as most is filtered by the atmosphere. However the small amount that does reach us can quickly damage the external eye tissue. Although the eye usually recovers, prolonged and excessive exposure can result in permanent damage to your retina. These rays cause sunburning.
Remember B for burn.
All our lenses cut out UVB.

UVA 320-400nm
Largely unaffected by the atmosphere, UVA is thought to be less significant than UVB. It is however known to be a major contributor of photoaging, and prolonged exposure increases the likelihood of developing cataracts and accelerating the ageing process.

IR
Infrared is considered to be only a minor factor in skin damage. It is thought to potentiate the damage caused by UVR, though under normal conditions there is no measurable damage to the eye. IR doesn't come in to play unless exposed at 12,000 meters

Blue Light
Thought to have a similar effect to UVA, blue light causes eye fatigue and can, in certain conditions, hinder focusing. A small percentage of blue light is allowed to enable true colour definition.
All our lenses significantly reduce blue light.

Lens Tints

BLOC's Karbon 8 decentred lens technology is designed to enhance athletic performance and provide unsurpassed optical clarity in varying light conditions guaranteeing 100% UVA, UVB and UVC as well as a high degree of blue light and infrared protection.

Brown: (B10 and B11) Cat.3 Our brown lenses are excellent at cutting glare, working very effectively in varying light conditions and helps to reduce eyestrain.

Smoke: (S10 and S11) Cat.3 This lens transmits the full colour spectrum. It does not change the way colours are seen and is most suited for prolonged wearing in bright conditions and ideally suited for people who cannot tolerate colour transformation.

Vermilion: (VE5) Cat.3 The unique hue of this lens makes it a true all rounder, equally at home in the brightest conditions albeit mountain, street or on the beach. The grey content ensures natural colour transmission, whilst allowing the vermilion to enhance red, green and yellow by eliminating a high degree of blue light. Thus increasing perception of detail and dramatically reducing eye fatigue

Vermillion Cat.1 and HDL Cat.2. both these lenses have similar characteristics. The light vermillion/violet tints help with contrasts against blue and green. Offering excellent definition in low light conditions with acceptable protection when bright. Ideal for sport played on grass particularly golf.

G15F: Cat.3 This green tint is truly the best all purpose lens, dramatically reducing eye fatigue in bright conditions and offering enhanced definition in lower light.

Citrus: Cat.1A high definition lens ideally suited to low light conditions.

Clear: Cat.0 generally only used at night or low light conditions for protection against foreign particles and wind penetration.

Metal Oxide Coatings (Flash Mirror): (S11and B11) A metallic coating applied to the front of the lens eliminating reflective glare and light transmission. Colours include silver flash, gold, blue and green.

Standards:
Heat and extreme cold, fire & acidic chemicals - these are just some of the tests we subject our eyewear to. BLOC eyewear not only has to pass European Standard En 1836 - 1997, American Standard ANSI 280.3 - 1986 and Australian Standard AS 1067.1 - 1990, it also has to pass the toughest of all - ours. Once they have passed the laboratory tests, then, and only then, is BLOC eyewear sent on its final test stage, the real world. Athletes rigorously test our product over land, on water and in the sky.
